What Is A Specialist Orthodontist?

A qualified dentist who has completed three further years of postgraduate training in orthodontics.
What does orthodontic treatment involve?

Treatment varies according to the type of problem. There are basically two types of braces - fixed and removable.

  • Fixed brace

A fixed brace is glued to the teeth by your orthodontist and is not removed until treatment is complete.

  • Removable braces can be removed for cleaning and contact sport. Your orthodontist will see you every six to eight weeks throughout your treatment period to adjust the braces.

Will It Be Uncomfortable?

The placement of braces is painless but it takes two days to adjust to wearing braces and you may find that your teeth and mouth feel tender. Your normal analgesics can help you through these few days.

Will I Need To Have Teeth Removed?

The extraction of teeth depends upon individual needs. For many people extractions are not necessary but for some it is unavoidable if the best cosmetic result is to be achieved. Your orthodontist will give you the options available to you at your first appointment.

What Are The Benefits Of Orthodontic Treatment?

How Much Does Orthodontic Treatment Cost?

If you are eligible for orthodontics under the NHS, treatment is free of charge for patients who commence orthodontic treatment before the age of eighteen. For private patients contract fees vary according to the complexity of the treatment. Payment may be spread over the duration of the treatment. All patients are made fully aware of the cost before they agree to treatment.

What Are The Benefits Of Private Orthodontic Treatment?

Our private patients have longer appointments allowing more consultation time with the orthodontist and appointments are available outside of school/work hours. A wider range of orthodontic materials & braces are available than are allowable under the NHS. These can be more discreet such as ceramic brackets lingual appliances, or Invisalign.

Can I Have Clear Or Tooth Coloured Braces?

Clear or tooth coloured braces are available but only under a private contract.
Can I have fixed braces on the inside if my teeth?

This type of treatment is available but again under private contract only

What Happens At The First Appointment?

At your first appointment your orthodontist will talk to you to understand what your concerns are. Photographs, x-rays and moulds of your teeth may also be taken so we can decide a treatment that is tailored for your needs and that you are happy with.

Will My Treatment Be Successful?

Yes provided you are committed to wearing and looking after your braces. A good, cooperative patient and a good caring orthodontist will ensure a great smile at the end of treatment.

Will My Teeth Stay Straight?

At the end of treatment the orthodontist will provide you with retainers which guarantee the stability of your teeth in their new position and prevent relapse. Retainers will be either permanent or removable. Removable retainers must be worn as instructed by the orthodontist.

When Can Treatment Start?

The start time of your treatment will depend on when the orthodontist feels you are ready to begin and will be discussed at your first appointment.
