NHS Orthodontic Treatment

A referral from your general dentist is required before we can arrange a NHS Consultation. At the initial consultation a full orthodontic assessment will be carried out to determine eligibility for NHS treatment. We are required to work within strict guidelines about who is eligible for NHS orthodontic treatment, working within the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).During the current period of change within the Local NHS Commissioning Teams there is no reliable information as to how this will change availability and access to treatment and hence waiting times. - from BOS website

Do I have to pay for NHS orthodontic treatment?

We are currently able to see patients under the age of 18 years, following a referral from your general dentist. An appointment for a full orthodontic assessment to determine eligibility for NHS treatment will be arranged, no fees payable. We are required to work within strict guidelines about who is eligible for NHS orthodontic treatment, working within the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).

Treatment for mild/cosmetic problems is not available on the NHS, IOTN guidelines apply. Click here for more information about the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).

For an NHS assessment, you must be referred by your own general dental practitioner; however you can contact us directly to arrange a self-funded/ private orthodontic consultation - you do not need to be referred to us by your dentist.

Why is there a waiting list?

Since 2006, under the terms of the new contract, NHS Local Commissioning Teams have been able to control the size of contracts held by orthodontists. This means that sometimes there is a mismatch between the number of patients who want and qualify for treatment and the availability of funding, resulting in a waiting list.

All practices have been allocated a finite amount of NHS funding for 2018, so please be aware that there is a treatment waiting list. Funding is subject to National Government changes from April 2019.
